Country Whisper Woman Series

This collection of work celebrates femininity. It explores themes of womanhood; of being a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, and a granddaughter. It is about shelter, comfort, and feeling safe. But mostly it is about my connection to my recently passed grandma, Wanda.

The colors used were based on what Wanda frequently donned, or based on memories of her, her home, her yard, and her garden. A few pieces are mounted onto what are meant to act as cameos, as she loved cameos. Some pleats are created to represent ruffles. My grandma had a Victorian aesthetic, In terms of both wardrobe and decor.

The mirrors were playing with the concept of reflection, both intellectual and tangible. I loved that the mirrors enabled one to see and admire both sides of the pleats. This encourages the viewer to look at the work from many different angles. In terms of grief, creating this series was a very cathartic way of coping with the loss of a loved one.

All of these forms are alluding to a comforting embrace, and the idea of intimacy. These works look soft, yet are actually quite strong, which becomes a metaphor for both me and my grandma. Her home was my haven.
